This limited edition bag features the titular image from Betye Saar’s etching The Man from Phrenology, 1965. Drawing from Saar’s personal interest in metaphysics, magic and the occult, this particular image was handpicked by the artist for this project.
Los Angeles based assemblage artist Betye Saar is one of the most important of her generation. Since the 1960s, her practice has evolved over time to succinctly reflect the environmental, cultural, technological, economic, racial and historical context in which it exists. Her prolific body of work includes nearly a decade’s worth of an experimental print practice, starting in the early 1960s, the result of a post-graduate printmaking class from UCLA.
Saar’s prints are the precursors of her present work investigating concepts of the ritual and community, and how objects retain the memories and histories of their owners, often revealing powerful expressions of familial and collective connections. She has used printmaking as a means to capture found imagery, frequently interlaying them with drawings from pages of her sketchbooks.
