Michael Dopp

Michael Dopp's previously unreleased books explore the idea of the book as a continuous exchange: between writers and readers, participants and voyeurs, art and periodical, private thoughts and public spaces, theory and practice. The difficult in ascribing any absolute label to these many manifestations is reflective to the collaborative environment in which artists’ books are made in. A spirit of performance, play and chance pushes the conventions of form, color and line. This process encourages overlaps in both appearance and interests. Dopps display his influences while at the same time invite us to reflect on the ambition of his reach.

Realized in 2014, each book is unique and features paint, pen and other mark-making on canvas and paper pages bound in linen. They are distinctly different in their handling of materials, yet remain interconnected by their shared relationship with both history and author.

The books were created in collaboration with Laura Owens' Studio on the occasion of her ongoing artist book project.
